A homicide investigation is underway after authorities say a 17-year-old girl was found dead Sunday night inside a Tinley Park home. The Medical Examiner identified the victim as Mia Maro, a senior at Victor Andrew High School, and ruled her death a homicide.
Detectives identified a person of interest, who they say is not a threat to the community. As of 9 p.m. Monday, no charges had been filed. Neighbors who spoke with WGN News said Maro lived in the house with her parents and two brothers.
One neighbor, who wished not to be identified, said yelling at the home in the 7800 block of W. 167th Street grabbed her attention Sunday evening. Throughout the day Monday, Maro’s friends and classmates collected flowers and signed a poster on her front lawn.
“She was one of the sweetest, kindest, smartest girls I’ve ever met,” friend Alyana Aldabbagh said. “I genuinely thought she was going to make a nice impact on this world because she was amazing. She helped me in school a lot.”
Aldabbagh said Maro was a talented athlete who ran track and cross country with her in middle school and helped her with AP government in high school. Maro was just weeks away from graduating. Other classmates admired her work ethic and how she treated others. May her soul rest in perfect peace.
