Kai’s father is Gil Kahele, who is the former Member of the Hawaii Senate from the 1st District. The son succeeded his father in the office and position of the senate member.

Maria Fe Day is the current wife of American politician Kai Kahele. Maria is a senior flight attendant at Hawaiian Airlines, where her husband is a commercial pilot. The two are parents to three daughters. They currently study is a Hawaiian language immersion school in Hilo.

Kai was born on March 28, 1974, in Miloli’i, Hawaii. He graduated from Hilo High School and attended Hawai’i Community College and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa in 1998.
Kai Kahele is a former military veteran and has completed several overseas missions. He has been deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan since 2005. He flew 108 combat sorties and commanded C-17 combat missions. He has logged 3075 hours of military flight time.
Just as Kai, his former wife also served in the military.
