DaBaby Embraces His Role As Hip Hop’s New Super Villain.
DaBaby is currently the most hated figure in music and possibly top ten in the world at this point.
The North Carolina rapper went from the favorite after dropping his debut studio album Baby On Baby to the most hated in the space of a year. Some say he got cocky real fast and let the fame change him but in the words of his new mentor – “Go ‘head and switch that style up, and if they hate then let ‘em hate and watch the money pile up.”
DaBaby is used to getting negative comments for his supposed lack of originality and repetitive rapping patterns, but the attention has recently switched to his off screen antics.
The 29-year old caught heat earlier this month after Twitter sleuths revealed he retweeted a Tweet making fun of Megan The Stallion’s alleged shooting by the hands of his SKAT collaborator.
Baby provided proof claiming he did no such thing and that it was a glitch retweet, but Meg wasn’t having it. From there a back and forth ensured.
“Support me in private and publicly do something different…these industry men are very strange. This situation ain’t no damn “beef” and I really wish people would stop down playing it like it’s some internet shit for likes and retweets,” Megan said.
Baby claimed he has no bad energy for Meg and that she has the situation all wrong, but the “WAP” rapper maintained Baby was two-faced for supporting her in private and doing the opposite in public.
“We already spoke abt this in private and you specifically said “that ain’t even no good business move why would I promote that shit” but now this ain’t your “beef” ? That ain’t real,” Meg replied.
Things escalated even futher this past weekend at Rolling Loud Miami. During Baby’s now much talked about set at the biggest hip hop festival in the world. The Suge rapper, who performed right after Megan Thee Stallion, brought out Tory Lanez onstage for a performance.
His actions were construed to be a middle finger to Megan and the millions of fans that have tried to cancel him for supporting Tory Lanez.
The move didn’t go down well with some of the concert attendees and one of them even chucked an “adida” at him.
The biggest talking point of Baby’s controversial set was his onstage homophobic call to action. The Rockstar rapper was accused of shaming gay men and spreading misinformation about HIV/AIDS.
“If you didn’t show up today with HIV, AIDS, or any of them deadly sexually transmitted diseases, that’ll make you die in two to three weeks, then put your cellphone lighter up,” Baby said before later adding, “Fellas, if you ain’t sucking dick in the parking lot, put your cellphone lighter up.”
Following intense backlash from the LGBTQ community, Baby took to his Instagram story to clarify his comments, saying it wasn’t malicious and his rant was for people that paid to attend his live show.
“I wasn’t going on no rant — that’s called a call-to-action,” he said. “That’s what that’s called because I’m a live performer. I’m the best live performer … you interact with your fans, you get what I’m sayin? Look. All the lights went up — gay or straight. You wanna know why? ‘Cause even my gay fans don’t have fuckin’ AIDS, stupid ass n*ggas.”
“They don’t got AIDS. My gay fans, they take care of they selves. They ain’t going for that. They ain’t no nasty gay n*ggas. They ain’t no junkies on the street … my gay fans, they ain’t goin’ for that. They got class, n*gga. They ain’t suckin’ no dick in no parking lot, n*gga.”
Baby’s haphazard apology seemingly made matters worse and more fans and celebrities including Lil Nas X’s father and Elton John have come out to criticize the rapper for his perceived ignorance.
Baby has since apologized for his comments about HIV but remains reluctant to apologize for his homophobic rant.
With his position being unpopular despite backings from T.I and renowned hip hop villain Boosie Badazz, you’d at least expect Baby to try and save face by owning up to his mistakes and maybe apologize for real, but Instead he has embraced his new found role as hip hop’s new super villain and has continued to fuel the hate.
On Wednesday (July 28), the Charlotte native released a video for his latest track “Giving What It’s Supposed To Give.” The video concludes with a message that reads; “Don’t fight hate with hate. My apologies for being me the same way you want the freedom to be you.”
Hip hop hasn’t had a good super villain figure since 50 Cent (Tekashi don’t count) and people are starting to believe DaBaby’s new controversial position could be as a result of 50 Cent’s mentorship.
Earlier this month 50 vowed to mentor DaBaby and also teach him about the mistakes he made, so perhaps he’s already teaching him the ways of the the villain.
“I lost pop [Smoke] before he could get it, This one already got it and he listen,” he wrote. “I’m a teach him all the mistakes i made, so he can be better than me. THIS IS HIP HOP!”
50 Cent is one of hip hop’s most controversial figures. In 2018 the G-Unit rapper bought 200 front row seats to Ja Rule’s concert in Arlington, Texas, just to ensure they’d be empty. 50 has mastered the art of not given a f-ck and trolling using clever, disruptive behavior that involves the use of memes and pugnacious pettiness.
Just like 50, Baby’s homophobic comments and no apology stance is losing him a few friends and endorsement deals. Fashion retailer boohooMAN, who he teamed up with in June to launch a summer 100-capsule has severed ties with the rapper.
“Diversity and inclusion are part of the boohoo Groups DNA and we pride ourselves on representing the diverse customers we serve across the globe,” the company said. “The statement continued, “We stand up and support the LGBTQ+ community, and we do not tolerate hate speech or discrimination in any form.”
British singer Dua Lipa who Baby collaborated with on “Levitating” have also severed ties with the rapper.
“I’m surprised and horrified at DaBaby‘s comments. I really don’t recognize this as the person I worked with. I know my fans know where my heart lies and that I stand 100% with the LGBTQ community. We need to come together to fight the stigma and ignorance around HIV/AIDS.”
Levitating is currently are most streamed song and is currently the #3 song on billboard’s hot 100.
Baby has seemingly brushed off news of his cancellation saying, “This how I bob n weave anything sent to destroy me. Check my resume and sit back. #MySoulAintForSale.”
As crazy as this may sound but Hip hop is homophobic. It’s abrasive, enlightening, ignorant, flamboyant and downright disrespectful. Telling rappers not to be homophobic is like trying to takeaway guns from gangs. Be ready for war.
Is DaBaby hip hop’s new super villain?
DaBaby is bringing back hip hop’s villainy era and more rappers are possibly going to join him soon. Hip hop is being targeted and rappers may now have to speak out against this forced censorship.
DaBaby has refused to fold and this writer finds his refusal to bow to the mob commendable.
Suburbans have found hip hop and are trying to take away it’s edge. Hip hop should support DaBaby or risk being censored.
