Police are investigating a deadly double shooting Tuesday in downtown Hartford in what is the city’s 28th homicide of the year.
Officers responded to the scene at about 3 p.m. in the 600 block of Broad Street, between Russ and Grand streets, after receiving a ShotSpotter alert in the area.
The shooting took place just blocks away from the state Capitol.
Neighbors said they heard gunfire, shouting and squealing tires. The shooting happened so fast, the scene was clear before Rob Berry could even make it to his window.
“It sounded like an automatic weapon,” Berry said.
Police said they received a call from Hartford Hospital that two gunshot victims arrived just after the ShotSpotter alert.
One of the men was pronounced dead at the hospital, officials said.
The victim has been identified as 18-year-old Ernesto Morales.
The other victim appears to be a man in his 20s. He is now in stable condition and is expected to survive, according to Hartford police.
Detectives are canvassing the area and are going door to door to look for witnesses to the shooting.
Hartford police believe the shooting was caught on video. They are asking residents and businesses to share surveillance footage with the Hartford police.
