It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that Monroeville Fire Company #1 reports the passing of Life Member Paramedic Fred Manno. Fred joined Company 1 on May 2, 1993. During his tenure he held various roles within the department, including company President in 1997 and 1998 and Executive Assistant in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1999 and 2000. He was also amongst the first paramedics in Monroeville and served as Medic 102 during his time with our department. Fred was a well-known member of the EMS community and touched many lives. At the time of his passing, he was actively employed with Monroeville EMS at Company 4 and North Huntingdon EMS/Rescue. He had also previously served time at Harmony EMS, Trafford EMS, Central Ambulance, Allegheny Ambulance and the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office. Our thoughts and prayers are not only with the Manno family during this difficult time, but also with his many friends and coworkers, who are grieving this great loss.
If you would like to pay your respects, viewings will be held from 1pm – 3pm and 6pm – 9pm on Tuesday at Wolfe Memorial, Forest HIlls Chapel (3604 Greensburg Pike, Pittsburgh 15221). A service will be held at 10am on Wednesday in the funeral home chapel. Fire and EMS personnel will then escort Fred to his final resting place in Coles Cemetery in Derry. As Fred was an avid animal lover, his family has asked that in lieu of flowers or gifts, a donation be made to an animal rescue of your choice in Fred’s name.

Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet, death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it, and that is how it should be, because death is very likely the single best invention of life. It’s life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new.
