Daniel worked as an art critic, editor, and freelance curator for the Swedish daily newspapers Dagens Nyheter and Expressen from 1989 until 1997.
Daniel served as an art theory instructor at Stockholm’s University College of Art, Craft, and Design from 1996 to 1998. He obtained his Ph.D. from Stockholm University’s Faculty of Philosophy in 1998, with a dissertation on Edmund Husserl.
He took up the directorship of the Swedish International Artists Studio Program in Stockholm (IASPIS) after earning his degree in 2000. Birnbaum has contributed to several international art periodicals, including Parquet, Artforum, and Frieze.
