Ian is the son of Candy and Pat Montgomery. The couple married in the early 1970s. Candy was a secretary for a company, whereas Pat was an electrical engineer. The couple gave birth to two children, a daughter named Jennifer and a son named Ian.
After Candy was declared innocent on October 29, 1980, the family moved out of Wylie, Texas. The family reportedly relocated to the new state of Georgia, where they reportedly still reside.

It all happened in June 13, 1980, when Candy went to Betty’s home to pick up their daughter Alisa for swimming lessons. Betty grew upset after learning of the affair and charged Candy with the axe. The two fought for the control of the weapon before Candy prevailed, hitting Gore 41 times and eventually killing her.
Montgomery confessed to the killing but maintained the statement that she did so in self-defense and was acquitted of murder. It was later revealed that childhood trauma had triggered Candy to a dissociative rage state and she was declared not guilty after a lengthy trial. Candy was 30 years old at that time.
