Ice Cube defeated in lawsuit against stock trading app Robinhood.
A California Judge has dismissed Ice Cube’s lawsuit against trading platform Robinhood, claiming the suit has no leg to stand on.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Laurel Beeler says Ice Cube wrongly tagged Robinhood’s use of his identity in a newsletter as an advertisement.
“The court dismisses the complaint for lack of standing because the plaintiff did not plausibly plead that Robinhood’s use of his identity suggested his endorsement of Robinhood’s products,” Judge Laurel Beeler said. “Robin-hood used Ice Cube’s picture and paraphrase of a line from his song to illustrate an article about market corrections.

That illustration does not suggest that the plaintiff endorsed Robinhood (even if Robinhood uses celebrity endorsements (including Nas and Jay-Z) to promote its actual products.
Ice Cube, whose birth name is O’Shea Jackson has 21 days to file an amended complain.
Ice Cube filed a lawsuit against Robinhood in March for using his image and catchphrase in a newsletter. Cube claimed their unauthorized attachment of his likeness to their “dangerous products and services” has resulted in substantial damage to his brand and the last thing he wants in this world is to be associated with their “horrible products.”
“In a cynical effort to appeal to a young demographic, Robinhood has engaged celebrity endorsers such as Jay-Z, Nas, and Jared Leto to endorse its products and services. Robinhood has picked on the wrong man this time,” Ice Cube said in the lawsuit.
