Noel Pearson is an Aboriginal activist and respected community leader from Hope Vale, a Lutheran Mission on the Cape York Peninsula’s Guugu Yimithirr Aboriginal community. He received honors from the University of Sydney’s Department of History. His dissertation is about Hope Valley Lutheran Church’s history from 1900 to 1950. Pearson graduated from law school in 1993.
Pearson co-founded the Cape York Land Commission in 1990 and served as its executive director until 1996, when he retired. He also works for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Council as a consultant. In Cape York, he continues to assist a variety of Aboriginal organizations and push for Aboriginal people’s rights to self-determination and land ownership.
Noel Pearson’s quarterly paper Radical Hope – Education and Equality in Australia was shortlisted for the 2010 John Barton Award.
