J. Cole second guesses himself in his new surprise freestyle over Drake’s Certified Lover Boy track “Pipe Down.”
“But lately I’ve been questioning, second guessing whether or not I’ve got something to offer since I done alluded poverty,” he raps. “Or has the money watered me down? / That truth is hard for me / Like the second time I got cut from the junior varsity.”
He makes mention of social media debates about his position in hip hop, and shouts out Drake and Kendrick. “Some people say that I’m running third, they threw the bronze at me/Behind Drake and Dot, yeah them n-ggas is superstars to me/Maybe deep down I’m afraid of my luminosity/So when you see me on red carpets, I’m movin’ awkwardly.”
In the accompanying video directed by Simon Chasalow, Jermaine takes on Las Vegas and takes off on a private jet with his Dreamville crew Bas and Ibrahim Hamad.
“Heaven’s EP” is Cole’s first release since The Off-Season released in May. The 12-track project debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and boasted appearances from 21 Savage, Lil Baby, Bas, 6lack, and Morray.
