Gujrat MLA Jignesh Mevani got apprehended late last night by Assam Police from a Circuit House in Palanpur, Gujarat.
Jignesh was reportedly taken to Ahmedabad last night before being transferred to Assam this morning. Mr. Mevani, a Dalit leader, is accused of inciting hatred between communities online.
Due to a request from official authorities, the site has withheld his recent tweets. The prominent leader got taken into custody shortly after an FIR was filed against him.
Several Gujarat Congress leaders, including Gujarat Congress President Jagdish Thakor, went to the airport after learning of the arrest. They were heard yelling anti-BJP slogans.
Jignesh Mevani got charged under section 153A of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with offenses involving the promotion of animosity between communities.

Mevani is an independent leader and does not have a political affiliation right now. But he has backed the Congress party for quite some time.

Last year, he and Kanhaiya Kumar, a political activist and former JNU students’ union leader, held a press conference with Congress President Rahul Gandhi.
Kanhaiya Kumar had joined the Indian National Congress at the time of the press conference.
And at the conference, Mr. Mevani pledged his support for Mr. Gandhi until the end of his term as an Independent MLA. Following that, he had expressed a desire to join the Congress.
Mevani is the convener of the Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch. He considers himself a social liberal and an Ambedkarite.
