Kendrick Lamar, SZA Sued For Unauthorized Use Of Artist’s Work In “All The Stars” Video.
Kendrick Lamar and SZA are being sued by artist, Lina Iris Viktor for allegedly stealing and using her artwork without her consent.
According to TMZ, Lina Iris claims her artwork titled “Constellations I,” “Constellations II” and Constellations III” were used in the official video for All The Stars despite her repudiations.
Lina says reps in charge of Black Panther contacted her in 2016 and most recently, in January to ask for permission to use her fine art in their promotional materials for the movie, but she refused them permission.
According to docs, despite Ms Viktor’s objections … they still went and used it anyway, which she calls “both an egregious violation of federal law and an affront to the artist, her livelihood, her legacy and to artists everywhere.”
The artist also claims the video tried to mimic the “unique look and feel” of her works, but also uses “specific copyrightable elements” including “stylized motifs of mythical animals, gilded geometric forms on a black background, and distinctively textured areas and patterns.”
Black Panther is a movie that celebrates and promotes black excellence and women empowerment. Ripping off a black woman and her work could be a bad look for the Ryan Coolglr directed film. Viktor is suing for damages and she wants an injunction prohibiting Kendrick Lamar and SZA from using her artwork to promote the soundtrack.
Black Panther: The Album featuring musical contributions from Kendrick Lamar, SZA, The Weeknd, James Blake, Future, ScHoolboy Q, Jay Rock and Khalid is currently No. 1 on the billboard charts, knocking Justin Timberlake’s Man Of The Woods to number two.
