Lil Wayne joins rising Chicago rapper Calboy on his new single “Miseducation,” which borrows its name and also pays homage to Lauryn Hill’s 1998 album Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill.
Produced by OZ and Austin Powerz, the song is centered around gun violence in Chicago. Speaking with Zane Lowe, Calboy explains how he managed to link up with Lil Wayne.
“Wayne actually reached out to me prior to me making the record. You know what I’m saying? And I never replied. I didn’t see it in my DM. For real. He sent me a message through the DM, “Man, you raw. You know what I’m saying? You got a lot of talent.” It wasn’t until I let my manager have access to my Instagram that he like, “Bro, you tripping. Wayne just DMed you.” I’m like, “Man, I really didn’t see it. I really didn’t see it,” he told Zane Lowe on Apple Music.
“I be so locked in on what I got going on, I really did not see it. So I replied right away. He instantly replied right away, even though it was like a while back, he replied right away. He sent me his cell phone number,” he continued. “I FaceTimed him. We just chopped it up and then, he just got to know me a little bit. He like, “Oh, whatever music you been working on, let me hear what you got.” We just going back and forth through the phone and just sending music. And he heard that. He like, “Man, this is absolutely crazy.” And then, an hour later, I got the verse back. Man, it was crazy. It was legendary. I had all my family members calling me, “Yo, let me hear that song. I need to hear it right now.” And it was like, everybody was just big ball of joy.”
Miseducation will live on Calboy’s forthcoming third studio effort Redemption, scheduled for release later this year.
