Chefs Nadia Lim and Vaughan Mabee and Auckland restaurateur Michael P Dearth are among this year’s judges. He tells Wallace Chapman what Season 7 will bring.
“Because it’s relatable, MasterChef, in which amateur cooks compete by preparing various meals, has become a massive worldwide phenomenon,” Dearth explains.
“As human beings, we all like cooking, and everyone has a favorite meal and a favorite person for whom they prepare it.”
He claims that the cooking in this season of MasterChef by a large diversified group of people from various cultures was exceptional. The judges had a difficult time choosing a winner.

In Point Chevalier, where he lives with his wife Annette (also a foodie), son Ezra, daughter Lucia, two British Blue cats, and a wolfhound cross named Marlo, he has built a beautiful paradise.
Michael P. Dearth does not refer to himself as a chef, although he is the owner of two of Auckland’s top restaurants, The Grove and Baduzzi, and can certainly cook at home. The next MasterChef NZ judge is a natural storyteller and upcycling master.

When Michael found their dream home, he called Annette, who was expecting our kid, and told her, “I’ve found it.”
The MasterChef judge has a liking for gardening. He says he enjoys it and that he and his wife have many more plans for it.

Michael Dearth, the driving force behind The Grove and Baduzzi, knows as much for their wine lists as for their cuisine and travels to France in quest of inspiration.
Both his mother and father, according to Dearth, are incredible cooks — they were a large family who sat around the table laughing and always had excellent, great food.
In addition, he enjoys cooking for his family and friends. Dearth, known for employing the top chefs in the industry, wanted to watch the contestants progress.
Lim, a MasterChef 2022 judge, met Dearth, 52, after her MasterChef victory in Auckland and was awestruck by the larger-than-life hospitality giant.
