Meek Mill sat down with Angie Martinez for an exclusive one on one session on her Power 105.1 show on Tuesday (May 8th). During the 26-minute long interview, the Philly rapper spoke on his time behind bars, the impact of the #FreeMeek campaign, his upcoming six-part docu-series produced by Amazon and JAY-Z, Safaree and more.
At around the 6:45 mark, Meek touched on self hate, which was largely centered around his feelings for Judge Genece Brinkley and Kanye West.
“He’s [Kanye West] trying to get a positive message out. I see what he’s trying to do,” Meek said. “I don’t understand it, but I can see what he’s trying to do. Like when he speaks about, ‘Why are 50 people killing each other?’ Black people get killed. A little girl gets shot in the head in the neighborhood, and everybody turn their head to it. But if a cop shoots somebody, everybody marches. I think it should be the same energy we’re giving to the cop.”
He later gave his opinion on Kanye’s controversial comments on TMZ about slavery being a choice. “When he’s talking about slavery and people had a choice, though, I disagree 10,000 percent,” he said. “I don’t know what he’s talking about. But I know that he’s trying to deliver a message for a better cause. What he’s trying to do. He’s not informed enough to speak on some things he’s speaking on.”
Meek concluded his thoughts on West by saying: “I’m not taking nothing from him. That’s somebody that inspired me. I’ve got my own battle to fight and I’m on some justice reform. I’m trying to free the slaves.”
