The New York Fire Department stated that the sixteen more marathon runners were sent to the hospital on Saturday morning.
While five people were in critical condition, eight others had non-life-threatening injuries, and four more suffered minor injuries.
David Reichman Cause Of Death Explained
David Reichman died after racing to the finish line, at 9am. He was subsequently pronounced dead at the Coney Island Hospital. A medical evaluation is still underway to determine the cause of death.
The race organizer New York Road Runners stated that as reported by the New York Times, the NYRR alerted participants ahead of time to be aware of heat problems.
On Saturday, New York had its first May heat advisory in 16 years, with temperatures reaching the upper 80s. According to the Times, temperatures were in the low 60s when the half marathon began at 7 a.m. and had risen to the low 70s by 11 a.m.
The national Weather Service stated that, the relative humidity in New York hit 97% throughout the race.
With that in mind, the New York Road Runners said in a statement to the New York Post that event organizers prioritized safety and that the man who died received rapid on-site medical assistance after falling.
