Authorities have released the name of a young man killed when a hail of gunfire rang out in a south Birmingham apartment complex Tuesday September 20, 2022 night.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim Wednesday as Stephen Lawrence Scott Jr. He was 19 and lived in Irondale.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald said 911 received numerous calls about the shooting. When they arrived, they found a wrecked vehicle in the entryway parking lot.
Inside the vehicle, they found Scott unresponsive. Investigators determined he had been shot.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead on the scene at 10:18 p.m.
Police then found a second victim. He was taken to an area hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.
Fitzgerald said it appeared the shooting started in a breezeway where investigators found multiple shell casings. “Based on the amount of rounds fired, we believe we may have more than one shooter,’’ he said.
He said he believes the victims were targeted. A motive has not been released.
Multiple vehicles and apartment units in the complex sustained damage from the gunfire.
While police were on the scene, someone let off more shots, but no one was reported injured. Fitzgerald said no suspects are in custody.
Scott is Birmingham’s first homicide 10 days, and the 109th homicide this year. Of those, six have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.
In all of Jefferson County, there have 147 killings, including the 109 in Birmingham.
