With a well-known penchant for weed, women, and muscle cars, few people can rap about life’s finer things like Curren$y can. Tapping in with his close confidante Fendi P, the Jet Life artists share “Smokin’ Potnas,” a new animated video.
Built around a creeping 808 bassline and noir-ish piano chords, TraumaTone’s “Smokin’ Potnas” instrumental evokes a streetwise version of the famous theme from The Pink Panther. Spitta and Fendi slink atop the beat to deliver crisp and stylish boasts about “chains holdin’ lucky charms” (Curren$y) and “money counters on the kitchen counter” (Fendi). Directed and animated by Shanna Salmon, the new video converts Spitta and Fendi into their cartoon altar egos, as they smoke up with models on a music video set as their lyrics come to life.
“Smokin’ Potnas” is the closing and titular track from Smokin’ Potnas, the recent collaborative mixtape by Curren$y and Fendi P. Unloading life lessons atop lush production, Curren$y and Fendi offer pearl after pearl of street wisdom on the project. Spitta offers a veteran perspective on growing your bankroll, while Fendi assumes the role of the striver, never satisfied even as his day-to-day grows more luxurious.
The two New Orleans natives are on top of their game, crafting slick flexes that weave within soul-samples and tuneful 808s. The project plays host to video singles like “Strategize” and “Swang.” Featuring production from Harry Fraud, Sledgren, TraumaTone, and more, Smokin’ Potnas is available to stream everywhere via Jet Life Recordings/EMPIRE.
