Tupac’s 1996 Biggie diss track “Hit ‘Em Up” has been discovered by Tiktok after the song was featured on episode one of the new season of HBO’s drama series Euphoria. Tiktok has the ability to amplify songs and make them even bigger so this shouldn’t be a problem right? Wrong.
Hit Em Up was released during the height of the East Coast-West Coast rivalry and is considered one of the most disrespectful songs in all of hip hop. The lyrics are threatening, gang affiliated and packed with vicious insults directed at several East Coast rappers. It wasn’t intended to be a fun song for teenagers to dance over, which proves how uninformed the white tiktok community or should I say “gen z” are with the culture and should probably leave it alone.
Some songs aren’t made for mainstream media and I feel Hit Em Up is one of those songs.
Perhaps I’m trippin?
This also could’ve been handled better if done by black creators, who are very much in tune with the culture.
Needless to say Black Twitter wasn’t feeling the gentrification and made their thoughts known. Checkout some reactions below.
