DaBaby’s rant at Rolling Loud Miami has sparked discussions about homophobia in hip hop. The 29-year old’s ignorant comments about HIV/AIDS have resulted in a sea of endorsement loses and high festival drops including Lollapalooza and Governors Ball.
During his performance the “Kirk” rapper was accused of shaming gay men and spreading misinformation about HIV/AIDS.
“If you didn’t show up today with HIV, AIDS, or any of them deadly sexually transmitted diseases, that’ll make you die in two to three weeks, then put your cellphone lighter up,” Baby said before later adding, “Fellas, if you ain’t sucking dick in the parking lot, put your cellphone lighter up.”
Despite Baby’s comments DaBrat tells TMZ it’s much easier now to be openly gay in hip hop compared to when she first started.
“It’s way better now. Back in the day it wasn’t cool, she said followed with “It’s 2021 so it’s a different vibe and people are 100 percent supportive.”
DaBrat, who revealed her sexual orientation last year said her fiancee Jesseca (Judy) Dupart gave her the courage to speak her truth and be herself.
“I’m very grateful that I get to live out loud and I met somebody that made me really want to not care about what anybody had to say and put myself first and my happiness first,” she continued.
Judy, the CEO of Kaleidoscope Hair says it was easier for DaBrat to come out in 2019 as gay because situations are more relaxed.
DaBaby has since apologized to the LGBTQ+ community for his “hurtful and triggering” comments, but people consider his apology forced and believe he’s only sorry because he’s losing DaBookings.
Fans can follow DaBrat and Judy’s engaged life when their new show “Brat Loves Judy” premieres Thursday night on WeTV.
