American businessman and diplomat, Donald Mayer Blinken died in East Hampton on September 22, 2022, at the age of 96.
Blinken served as the United States Ambassador to Hungary from 1994 to 1997. His son, Antony Blinken, is the incumbent Secretary of State of the United States in the presidency of Joe Biden.
“My family lost a parent and grandparent, a source of love and inspiration — my father Donald Blinken,” Antony Blinken announced via a tweet on Thursday.
Blinken was a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps, a U.S. Ambassador, president of the Mark Rothko Foundation, chair of the State University of New York.

Blinken met Mark Rothko in 1956. He was president of the Mark Rothko Foundation from 1976 to 1989. He was a director and one of the founders of E. M. Warburg Pincus & Company, an investment bank in New York. He served as the chairman of board of trustees for the State University of New York from 1978 to 1990.
In 2015, the Open Society Archives in Hungary was renamed the Vera and Donald Blinken Open Society Archives after receiving a major donation from the couple.
