Jay-Z is reportedly interested in a takeover of the NFL’s Denver Broncos, but he has the world’s richest man to contend with, according to Front Office Sports.
The hip hop mogul worth $1.4 billion can’t afford the team and would need the help of partners to purchase the the Broncos, which is expected to hit the market in 2022 for $4 billion. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has also been listed as a potential owner.
Bezos previously held talks for a 40% stake in the Washington Football Team in February and is reportedly still interested in NFL ownership.
The Broncos are not currently for sale, but that could change next year.
Team president/CEO Joe Ellis said in August that Denver aims to have a “timely, responsible and orderly determination of ownership” in 2022.
Sports attorney Richard Roth believes there will be no shortage of suitors because NFL ownership is “definitely a status symbol” for the super-rich.
Pat Bowlen purchased the Broncos for $78 million in 1984 and died in June 2019, with a potential sale by his daughters setting up the biggest franchise sale in U.S. sports history.
