Creative designer Virgil Abloh has died at age 41. The Off-White label founder reportedly died in the early hours of Sunday (November 28) after privately battling cancer for 2 years.
According to a statement shared by his family on his Instagram page, Virgil was diagnosed with “a rare, aggressive form of cancer” called cardiac angiosarcoma.
Pharrell wrote on Twitter,
“We are devastated to announce the passing of our beloved Virgil Abloh, a fiercely devoted father, husband, son, brother, and friend,” the statement read. “He is survived by his loving wife Shannon Abloh, his children Lowe Abloh and Grey Abloh, his sister Edwina Abloh, his parents Nee and Eunice Abloh, and numerous dear friends and colleagues.”
Abloh’s family revealed that while he battled with “a rare aggressive form of cancer” since his diagnosis in 2019, he never let his health challenges affect his creativity or slow him down.
“Through it all, his work ethic, infinite curiosity, and optimism never wavered,” the statement added. “Virgil was driven by his dedication to his craft and to his mission to open doors for others and create pathways for greater equality in art and design.”
Abloh believed in his ability to inspire generations, and according to his family, he often said “Everything I do is for the 17-year-old version of myself.”
Born on Sept. 30, 1980, Abloh served as chief executive officer of the Off-White label, which he founded in 2012. He also served as the first black creative director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear collection.
Abloh’s family have requested to be left alone while they “grieve and celebrate Virgil’s life.”
