Akon Says He Was Happier When He Was Poor: “Money Brings A Lot Of Evil”

Akon apologizes to people offended by his rich vs poor comments, say he’s speaking from personal struggles.

Akon isn’t backtracking on his comments that poor people have it easier than the rich and famous.

While speaking on the death of Michael K. Williams last month, the 48-year old singer/entrepreneur shared a controversial opinion that implied rich people face more difficult situations than poor people.

“The famous and the rich go through more issues than the poor. You know when they say ‘More money, more problems,’ that’s a real thing,” he told TMZ.

Following the backlash he received on social media, TMZ caught up with the Senegalese-American to find out if his views on the subject has changed. Akon doubled down on his comments, but makes it clear he’s speaking from personal experience.

“It’s not really more so a walk back, but what I do want to express is that sometimes when comments like that are made – I always speak according to what I’m personally going through myself,” Akon explained.
“Nobody can sit there and tell me I didn’t go through poverty.”

“I know what poverty looks like, but I also know what success looks like, and from my personal experience, I’m having more problems successfully dealing with all that comes with success than I had when I was poor. I was actually happier when I was poor,” he added.

Akon says he understands not everyone can be successful and apologized to people that may have misconceived his comments for arrogance.

“I would apologize to those that felt that comment affected or emotionally put them in a position that made it make seem like I was arrogant because that’s not the way I wanted to come off.”

“Money is not always the cure…. It’s the mindset. The money creates and breeds so much jealousy, envy, and money brings a lot of evil.”

Does he have a point? Or is he still talking crap?
